KORG iWAVESTATION for iOS finally released

I have been waiting for this for a long time. My friend had the original KORG Wavestation in the 1990s, and I got to play with it a little bit. I got the first plug-in version with the KORG Legacy Collection in 2006. Ever since the iPad was released and KORG started to put out great apps for it, I’ve been waiting patiently for the iOS version of the Wavestation. And now it’s finally here, yours to be had for an introductory price of 19.99 € on the App Store*.

I don’t know how long it has been in development, but now it’s available as a standalone iPad and iPhone app, and also as a gadget called Milpitas inside KORG Gadget*, which was also updated to version 2.9.0 when the iWAVESTATION was released. As was the case with iM1 and ODYSSEi, Gadget detects them and is kind enough to ask if you want to install.

I’ll get you a screenshot as soon as I can, long story, don’t ask. Do have a look at and listen to Synth Anatomy’s First Play video:

KORG is packing so much sounds with the iWAVESTATION that it is just as insane as with the plug-in version the Legacy Collection. You get the original eleven RAM and ROM cards (not really cards, they’re just bits inside your iPad, you know) with the app, and there is a further set of seven cards available as a single in-app purchase for 4.99 €. (I snapped it up right away.)

If you’re designing your own sounds, you probably already know what the Wavestation is good for, and the iWAVESTATION is a Wavestation. But since it was just released (as if that was an excuse), the product page and manual were not found from the app’s INFO menu. So for this quick look I won’t be going into any sound or performance editing.

The joystick was a big deal with the original Wavestation for mixing and morphing between different sounds, so I’ll need to see if there’s any way I could get my trusty old KORG microKONTROL with its joystick connected to the iPad (hopefully just a power issue). Of course I could just go and get a new KORG controller keyboard, like the wireless microKEY Air. The 25-key version is the only one with the joystick; the wider ones have a pitch bend and modulation wheel.

Get KORG iWAVESTATION* from the App Store.
