UR22 and El Capitan

As the result of some equipment rotation, my Steinberg UR22 audio interface ended up connected with my MacBook Pro, which is running OS X El Capitan version 10.11.4. I was a little surprised to find that the white LED on the UR22 was blinking – meaning that the interface is not connected. (A steady light means it is.) Also, the Settings extension for the Yamaha Steinberg USB Driver would not load when I tried to check the version of the driver.

Apple always seems to make some drastic changes to the audio system of OS X in every major version, so that audio interface manufacturers need to play catch up for a while. Usually they don’t take a lot of time to release updated drivers, but a new major OS X release is a good way to gauge who is on the ball and who is not. Usually Create Digital Music compiles a frequently updated list of compatible products, as they did with El Capitan.

It turned out that Yamaha/Steinberg have already updated the USB audio driver a couple of times since the release of OS X El Capitan, but I was just running an older version of it. Downloading the latest driver from Yamaha or Steinberg cures the problem. Just follow the installation guide and install the new driver over the old.

Drivers updated, mon capitan! Full speed ahead!

The Steinberg UR22 has been discontinued. Try the Steinberg UR22 mkII* instead.

NOTE: I’m trying out my new Thomann store redirector. If you follow the UR22 mkII link above, it should suggest you a regional Thomann web store in the European Union, based on your browser’s language setting. Let me know if it works, or doesn’t. (Twitter is fine.)
